Sunrise On The Bund Overview

First Impressions

Walking into Sunrise On The Bund, you immediately sense this isn’t your typical Shanghai five-star hotel. The lobby has this understated elegance that feels refreshingly authentic — none of that over-the-top glitz you sometimes get in luxury properties. What struck me most was how the staff genuinely seemed to care about getting things right, not just going through the motions. The whole place has this calm, sophisticated energy that makes you want to slow down and actually enjoy being there.

Location & Neighborhood

Here’s the thing about Hongkou district — it’s one of those areas that locals love but tourists often overlook, and that’s exactly what makes it special. You’re close enough to the Bund’s famous skyline views (honestly, some of the best vantage points are just a short walk away), but you’re not dealing with the constant crowds and tourist chaos. The neighborhood has this authentic Shanghai feel with tree-lined streets and local cafes where you’ll actually hear Shanghainese being spoken. Couples particularly seem to get this location — I mean, there’s something romantic about being slightly removed from the hustle while still having easy access to everything that matters.

The Rooms

The rooms here strike that perfect balance between modern comfort and thoughtful design. What I appreciated most was the attention to details that actually matter — blackout curtains that really work, a bathroom with proper water pressure, and windows that open (you’d be surprised how rare that is in Shanghai hotels). The beds are genuinely comfortable, not just expensive-looking, and there’s enough space to spread out without feeling like you’re rattling around in an oversized suite. The views vary depending on your room, but even the city-facing ones give you a nice sense of the neighborhood’s character.

Dining & Amenities

The continental breakfast is actually worth getting up for — and I say this as someone who usually just grabs coffee and runs. They’ve got a good mix of Western and local options, plus the coffee is properly made, not that weak hotel stuff you sometimes get. What really impressed me was the free parking — in Shanghai, that’s practically unheard of for a luxury hotel in a decent location. It’s one of those practical perks that makes a real difference if you’re planning to explore beyond the city center or have business meetings in different districts.

Why Guests Love It

There’s something refreshingly genuine about Sunrise On The Bund that keeps drawing people back. It’s not trying to be the flashiest or most Instagram-worthy hotel in Shanghai — instead, it focuses on being really, really good at the things that matter. The location gives you that insider’s perspective on the city while keeping you connected to the main attractions. The service feels personal rather than scripted, and honestly, after a few days here, you start to understand why the ratings are so consistently high. It’s the kind of place that makes you feel like you’ve discovered something special, even in a city as massive as Shanghai.

Reviews of Sunrise On The Bund

  • Peter from Australia – 18 May 2025 (6/10)

Nice sized room and clean bathroom

What could be improved: Pool facilities were closed for renovation and not available. Construction next door was noisy

  • Sutini from Singapore – 31 December 2024 (7/10)

The hotel’s prime location was highly convenient, but the standout feature was the thoughtfully designed bathroom amenities. The heated toilet seat, along with adjustable front and rear wash functions and an integrated heater, added a level of sophistication and comfort that elevated the overall experience

What could be improved: While the hotel appears to have undergone renovations, the wooden furniture retains a rustic and classic aesthetic, leaving it unclear whether this was intentional or if the pieces are remnants from the past. Additionally, being a classic building, the room’s ceiling height is relatively low, and the mattress could be upgraded to meet the comfort standards expected of a quality hotel.

  • 瑜 from China – 16 December 2024 (9/10)

Clean and well-furnished room with much sunshine!

What could be improved: I wish stay a couple of days more!

  • Akriti075 from India – 20 November 2024 (8/10)

Great Location, close to the Bund (not on the Bund). Rooms are comfortable and spacious. Good breakfast.

What could be improved: Why is there no (opaque) door on the toilet!? or a curtain on the bathroom window? There are places you need privacy even from your partner 😀

  • Fangbin from Australia – 8 November 2024 (8/10)

The staff were attentive, professional and accomodating.
Much appreciated the complimentary fruit platter.

What could be improved: The aircon system was sucks and so hot during my stay

  • John from Australia – 22 September 2024 (7/10)

Davis and Morgan the concierge were exceptional

  • John from Australia – 17 September 2024 (8/10)

    Very helpful

What could be improved: Expensive tepanyaki

  • Linda from United Kingdom – 31 October 2023 (6/10)

    Location was good

What could be improved: Construction work outside room on opposite side of road 24hrs a day too noisy to sleep

  • Henriette from United Kingdom – 1 October 2023 (9/10)

Close to North Bund and the ferry station to Pudong. Also walking distance to Raffles city Shopping Center. Very comfortable, clean and spacious room. For Jing’an or FFC it is easiest to take a taxi. There is currently a large building site behind the hotel, so I was given a room facing the side towards the river.

  • Dewi from Netherlands – 11 August 2023 (8/10)

The hotel is perfectly located within walking distance from the Bund. The location is quiet, and there are enough restaurants within 5-10 min. Walk

What could be improved: The beds are hard
