Shanghai old Alleyway Overview
First Impressions
Walking into Shanghai old Alleyway feels like discovering a secret that locals have been keeping to themselves. This three-star boutique property sits tucked away on the third floor of a building on Nanchang Road, and honestly, you might walk right past it if you’re not paying attention. The entrance has this understated charm that immediately tells you this isn’t your typical chain hotel — it’s something more intimate and authentic.
Location & Neighborhood
You know what really struck me about this place? The location is absolutely unbeatable, and I mean that. With a location score of 9.9, you’re literally in the heart of Shanghai, surrounded by the kind of old alleyways (longtang) that give the city its character. I could walk to People’s Square in about ten minutes, and the French Concession’s tree-lined streets are right at your doorstep. The couples who stay here seem to get it — they’ve rated the location 9.7 for romantic getaways, and I can see why. There’s something magical about stepping out into those narrow lanes where old Shanghai still breathes.
The Room Experience
The room I stayed in was compact but thoughtfully designed, with traditional Chinese elements mixed with modern comfort. What I appreciated most was how they’ve managed to capture that old Shanghai aesthetic without making it feel like a museum. The windows look out onto the alleyway below, and in the mornings you can hear the neighborhood coming to life — vendors setting up, locals heading to work, the authentic sounds of the city. It’s not the biggest space you’ll find, but everything you need is there, and the attention to detail shows.
Authentic Shanghai Living
This is where Shanghai old Alleyway really shines — it gives you a taste of what living in old Shanghai actually feels like. The building itself is part of the experience, with its vintage elevator and the way neighbors nod hello in the hallways. I found myself spending time just wandering the surrounding lanes, discovering tiny shops and local eateries that most tourists never see. The staff here actually knows the neighborhood and can point you toward the best xiaolongbao spot around the corner (trust me on this one).
Why Guests Love It
With a 9.2 rating, guests clearly connect with what this place offers — authenticity in a city that’s changing rapidly. It’s not about fancy amenities or marble lobbies; it’s about experiencing Shanghai the way it was meant to be experienced. The couples who keep coming back understand that sometimes the best travel memories come from staying somewhere that feels real rather than polished. If you’re looking for a genuine Shanghai experience and don’t mind trading some polish for character, this little gem delivers exactly that.
Hotels in Shanghai line neon avenues, lilong lanes, and riverfront promenades perfumed with osmanthus.

The Location! Everything may be forgiven considering the location. You feel Yourself amazing in this district of the Shanghai. Just know – there are steep stairs, so large luggage may be a hustle. Old electrical circuits may turn off during shower or cooking. Other then that – it’s quite cozy, light and amazingly situated little apartment! Can recommend 🙏
