Shanghai Huaihai Mansion Overview

First Impressions

Walking into Shanghai Huaihai Mansion, you immediately sense this isn’t your typical four-star hotel. The building sits tucked away on a quiet lane off South Maoming Road, which honestly makes it feel more like discovering a well-kept secret than checking into a standard business hotel. There’s something refreshingly understated about the entrance — no flashy lobby displays or overwhelming marble everywhere, just clean lines and that particular kind of calm you don’t expect to find in central Shanghai.

Location & Neighborhood

Here’s what I love about this spot: you’re right in Huangpu District, but on one of those tree-lined side streets that actually lets you breathe. South Maoming Road puts you within walking distance of some seriously good shopping and dining — I mean, you can hit the French Concession’s best cafes without dealing with subway transfers. The couples who stay here clearly get it (they rate the location 9.4, which honestly doesn’t surprise me). You know what’s great? You can walk to People’s Square in about fifteen minutes, but when you come back at night, it’s quiet enough to actually sleep.

The Room Experience

The rooms at Shanghai Huaihai Mansion strike this nice balance between modern comfort and not trying too hard to impress. Everything works the way it should — decent WiFi, good water pressure, air conditioning that doesn’t sound like a jet engine. I particularly appreciated the windows, which actually open (not always a given in Shanghai hotels) and let in natural light without the street noise you’d expect. The beds are comfortable enough that you’ll sleep well, and there’s sufficient space to spread out your stuff without feeling cramped.

Breakfast & Dining

The breakfast situation here is actually pretty solid — they’ve got this mix of Full English, Asian options, American standards, and vegetarian choices that covers most bases. What I found useful is their breakfast-to-go option, which is perfect for those mornings when you want to grab something and head out to explore rather than sitting in a dining room. The Asian breakfast items are done well (not just an afterthought), and the coffee is better than you’d expect from a four-star property.

Why Guests Love It

With an 8.3 rating and that 9.3 location score, Shanghai Huaihai Mansion clearly does something right. It’s the kind of place that doesn’t overwhelm you with amenities you won’t use, but nails the basics that actually matter when you’re traveling. The staff seems to understand that sometimes you just want things to work smoothly without a lot of fuss. For couples especially, there’s something appealing about having a quiet base in such a central location — you get the best of Shanghai right outside your door, but you can retreat to somewhere that feels more residential than touristy.

Locals suggest to book apartments in Shanghai around Former French Concession for plane trees, espresso bars, and indie boutiques.

Reviews of Shanghai Huaihai Mansion

  • Claudia from Germany – 3 May 2025 (8/10)

The location was in an interesting area. The hotel was very quiet. Nice decorated.

What could be improved: It seems, that there are not often non chinese speaking guests. English conversation was difficult with the women at the reception. An english guideline might be helpful. Breakfast was a little bit unorganised too.
Nice designed rooms, but not enough space to leave the luggage. We decided to take a bigger room for a higher price

    浴室設備復古很特別

What could be improved: 照片跟現場狀況 不太一樣

  • Mary from Australia – 1 February 2025 (3/10)

    Area of Shanghai

What could be improved: The absence of any communication with staff as there was no English and no adequate translation Therefore the service I booked was not delivered
    Spoilt our arrival in Shanghai

  • Sergio from United States – 1 January 2025 (9/10)

The location is amazing and the decor is very modern and classy

What could be improved: The rooms are detached from the main structure as in a motel, so you need to walk outdoor. The windows are really tiny

  • Robyn from New Zealand – 13 November 2024 (9/10)

Outstanding location for us. We could step out onto the surrounding streets and explore beautiful shops, eyeopener malls, restaurants. Always felt safe. The hotel staff were professional, empathetic and excellent ambassadors for their employer and China. We chose it because it was a original mansion, so much character and the new addition related well. A delightful garden with outdoor seating a treasure. Delicious substantial breakfast. Absolutely no noise could be heard in our room. The price was very good value.

What could be improved: Drivers found it difficult to locate the Mansion on their electronic maps so we always used Novel Building ? opposite as our pick up. Given that we booked for six nights we were taken aback and dismayed to discover that our Superior Double Room although beautifully appointed had frosted windows.

  • Frederic from France – 11 November 2024 (5/10)

What could be improved: Room without real window…few lights…
    breakfast.very poor…
    Best regards

  • Louise from France – 7 November 2024 (9/10)

What could be improved: Bruits de travaux et canalisations pendant notre séjour.

Le personnel ne parle pas du tout anglais, mais nous nous en sortons avec un peu de patience et les applications de traduction.

  • Valerie from France – 24 October 2024 (9/10)

Gentillesse du personnel, propreté et emplacement idéal

    What could be improved: Rien

  • Maarten from Netherlands – 24 September 2024 (9/10)

Perfect location with nice shops en bars. However hotel is quiet, because it lies a little behind the main street. Friendly personell. Good bed. Would certainly go there again.

What could be improved: Unfortunatly they do not speak English. Rooms are rather small.
