Shanghai alleyway Overview
First Impressions
You know what struck me about Shanghai alleyway? The name actually tells you everything you need to know. This three-star boutique hotel sits tucked away on a quiet lane off South Shaanxi Road, and honestly, finding it feels like discovering a secret. The entrance is understated — no flashy signage or grand lobby — just a simple doorway that opens into something surprisingly charming. I mean, in a city where everything seems to compete for attention, there’s something refreshing about a place that doesn’t need to shout.
Location Magic
The location is honestly the star here, and I get why couples rate it so highly. You’re in Shanghai‘s Xuhui district, which puts you right in the sweet spot between the French Concession’s tree-lined streets and the shopping buzz of Huaihai Road. What I love is that you can walk to some of the city’s best cafes and vintage shops in about five minutes, but when you retreat back to the lane, it’s surprisingly peaceful. The metro connections are solid too — Shaanxi South Road station is close enough that you’re not dragging your luggage far, but far enough that you don’t hear the rumble.
The Room Experience
The room I stayed in was compact but thoughtfully designed — and I actually mean thoughtfully, not just throwing around hotel marketing speak. Someone clearly understood that in Shanghai, space is precious, so every corner serves a purpose. The bed was comfortable enough (though not luxurious), and there’s decent storage for a week-long stay. The bathroom is small but functional, and the shower pressure was better than I expected. What really worked for me was the window — depending on which room you get, you might overlook the lane itself or catch glimpses of the neighborhood’s old Shanghai architecture.
Neighborhood Vibes
This is where the hotel really shines, because you’re staying in an actual Shanghai neighborhood rather than some tourist bubble. In the morning, you’ll see locals heading to work, elderly residents doing tai chi in nearby parks, and street vendors setting up for the day. There’s a great little restaurant about two blocks away that serves incredible xiaolongbao — the kind of place you’d never find without staying somewhere like this. The whole area has this lived-in feeling that makes you feel less like a tourist and more like a temporary resident.
Why Guests Love It
Look, this isn’t a place for travelers who need a concierge and room service — it’s for people who want to experience Shanghai rather than just visit it. The staff is helpful without being overly formal, and they seem to genuinely care about making sure you’re comfortable. What guests consistently mention (and what I experienced too) is how the location gives you access to both the historic charm of old Shanghai and the energy of the modern city. For the price point, you’re getting something that feels authentic and well-located, which in Shanghai is actually pretty rare. It’s the kind of place you’d recommend to friends who want to really explore the city.

Location is exceptional just steps from subway Line 1/10/12, Pakrsons, and iapm. Can walk to foreigner hangouts on Donghu Rd. I stayed for a month, got a gym membership nearby and had many options for food, coffee, etc. Local host was very responsive and provided a number of extras. Clean, quiet, and no significant smells. We just moved out down the street to a more expensive local hotel chain and it's dirty, noisy, and smells.
What could be improved: Shower is small. I'm averaged size and it was a bit of a challenge. Windows: there is one that is covered with a sheet in the bedroom, and there is one in the bath which has a fan in it that is constantly running (which is a good thing for air circulation). So just be aware that it's basically a small closed in hallway with little natural light. I like no light, it's good for sleeping in late. 🙂Cheng-han from Taiwan – 20 March 2025 (9/10)

What could be improved: Номер находится в подвале жилого дома. Соответственно окон нет, за исключением небольшого окошка в санузле. Думаю, что гости имеют право знать об отсутствии окон. В номере не идеальная чистота. Если для кого-то это не важно, то пару – тройку ночей перекантоваться сойдет. Тем более, что хозяин компенсирует эти неудобства пивом, водкой и виски.Mery from Chile – 6 February 2025 (7/10)
nice clean apartment with very good location.
doesn’t have kitchen but they provide microwave, refrigerator, kettle, cutlery and plates.
you have heater, bed warmer, wash machine and dryer.
What could be improved: the bed was super uncomfortable, you can feel the wood, almost no mattress (they just use a thin one). very difficult to have a properly rest.Philippe from Switzerland – 21 January 2025 (9/10)

What could be improved: Нет окон в квартире.Gordana from China – 11 November 2024 (4/10)
Good location. Nice welcome by owner.
What could be improved: Very uncomfortable bed, no mattress, just tiny cover on top of wooden planks. Black fungus on the shower curtainJirakom from Thailand – 6 November 2024 (8/10)
