Mercure Shanghai Hongqiao Railway Station Overview
First Impressions
The Mercure Shanghai Hongqiao Railway Station sits right in the heart of Minhang District, and honestly, the location couldn’t be better if you’re planning to hop on trains to other cities. I mean, you’re literally steps away from one of Shanghai‘s busiest transport hubs, but somehow the hotel manages to feel surprisingly calm once you’re inside. The lobby has that modern Mercure vibe — clean lines, warm lighting, nothing too flashy but definitely polished enough for a four-star property.
The Room Experience
My room was exactly what I expected from this chain — well-designed, functional, and comfortable without trying too hard to impress. The beds are actually really good here (I’m picky about mattresses), and the soundproofing works better than you’d think considering how busy this area gets. You know what I appreciated most? The blackout curtains — they’re thick enough to block out the city lights completely, which is crucial when you’re dealing with jet lag or early morning train departures.
Location & Getting Around
Here’s the thing about staying near Hongqiao Railway Station — you’re not exactly in the touristy part of Shanghai, but that’s not necessarily bad. The area feels more like where actual locals live and work, which I found refreshing after spending time in the more polished districts. There’s a decent mall nearby (Sincere Center, actually), and plenty of local eateries if you want to venture beyond the hotel. Plus, the free parking is genuinely useful if you’re renting a car, which is rare to find in Shanghai without paying through the nose.
Breakfast & Dining
The breakfast spread here is honestly impressive — they’ve got this huge buffet setup with everything from congee and dim sum to American-style eggs and bacon. I was surprised by how good the vegetarian options were too, and they clearly put effort into accommodating different dietary needs. The restaurant area gets pretty busy during peak hours (around 7-8 AM), but the staff keeps everything well-stocked and fresh. Pro tip: if you’re catching an early train, they start serving at 6 AM, which saved me more than once.
Why Guests Love It
Look, this isn’t the kind of place you choose for Instagram photos or bragging rights — it’s the hotel you pick when you want things to just work smoothly. The staff actually speaks decent English, the WiFi is solid throughout the building, and everything feels reliable in that reassuring Mercure way. Couples seem to really appreciate the quiet atmosphere and how easy it makes exploring other parts of China by rail. If you’re the type who values practicality over flash, and especially if your Shanghai trip involves train travel to other cities, this place just makes sense. It’s not trying to be something it’s not, and sometimes that’s exactly what you need.

Spacious rooms, excellent breakfast, staff not speaking english but very cooperative in trying to communicate (with phone translator).
What could be improved: The hotel is classified as 'close to Hongqiao airport', but in reality it is not so close, it takes approx ten minutes by taxi. For sure not a walkable distance. The internal restaurant is offering only breakfast, no dinner and no room service, so the only alternative is to walk around (where there are only dining places for locals, a bit difficult situation for foreigners, as nobody speaks english). Wi-fi connection procedure difficult (it is necessary to return to the reception to ask for helpt), and then working very poor, slow and with frequent interruptions. Overall experience definitely lower than Mercure standards.
