First Impressions

Walking into Shanghai Hills & Serendipity MCM Near Line1 & Line2 People’s Square, I honestly wasn’t sure what to expect from the name alone — it’s quite a mouthful. But you know what? This three-star property surprised me in the best way. The lobby has this mid-century modern vibe that feels both retro and fresh, and the staff immediately made me feel welcome. It’s tucked into the Jinou Wan Guo Building on Xinchang Road, which might sound obscure, but trust me — the location is absolutely golden.

Location & Getting Around

Here’s the thing about staying in Huangpu District — you’re literally in the beating heart of Shanghai. I mean, People’s Square is right there, and when locals tell you something has an excellent location score, they’re not kidding around. You can walk to the Shanghai Museum in about ten minutes, and Nanjing Road (the shopping paradise) is practically next door. The subway connections are incredible too — both Line 1 and Line 2 are easily accessible, which means you can get anywhere in the city without the hassle of figuring out transfers.

The Room Experience

My room was compact but thoughtfully designed, which is exactly what you want in a city where space is premium. The MCM theme carries through with clean lines and warm wood accents that actually work really well together. The bed was surprisingly comfortable for a three-star place, and I appreciated the large windows that let in plenty of natural light. The bathroom was modern and spotless — nothing fancy, but everything you need after a long day of exploring the city.

Neighborhood Vibes

What I love about this area is how it balances tourist attractions with real Shanghai life. You’ll find street food vendors selling incredible xiaolongbao just around the corner, and there’s this energy that comes from being where locals actually work and live. The Bund is close enough for evening strolls along the Huangpu River, but you’re not dealing with the constant crowds that come with staying right on the waterfront. It’s that sweet spot where you feel connected to the city without being overwhelmed by it.

Couples seem to really appreciate this place, and I can see why — there’s something romantic about having such easy access to Shanghai’s most iconic spots while still having a quiet retreat to come back to. The value is honestly hard to beat; you’re getting a prime location and comfortable accommodations without the premium price tag of the big international chains. Plus, the staff goes out of their way to help with directions and recommendations, which makes a huge difference when you’re trying to navigate a city this size. It’s one of those places where the location does most of the heavy lifting, but the hotel itself doesn’t let you down.

  What could be improved: – 난방따위 안됨. 너무 춥고 방 안이 냉골임. 에어컨 난방기능이 있지만 너무 노후화 되어있어 무용지물임
  – 방 컨디션도 구림. 습하고 분위기가 안좋음;
  – 무슨 중국의 낡은 오피스텔? 같은 곳에 있는 숙소임. 옆 집 현관에 무서운 빨간 부적같은거 덕지덕지 붙여져 있는데 진짜 무섭고 분위기 흉스러웠음;;
  – 온수가 안나옴ㅋㅋㅋㅋㅋㅋ정확히 말하자면 온수가 나오다가 일정량 이상 쓰면 끊김ㅋㅋㅋ한겨울에 냉수샤워 해야함
  – 2인 5박 예약이였는데 제공된 수건은 딸랑 4장..ㅋㅋ
  – 중국 택시비 싸니까 굳이굳이 난징동루 근처로 잡지 마시고, 걍 좀 떨어진 곳 잡으셔요. 저는 3박째 되는 날 아침 도저히 못 있겠어서 체크아웃하고 다른 호텔 잡았는데 진짜 너무 좋았음.

  La location est parfaite à moins de 10 minutes à pied de la place People’square même si à Shanghai tout se fait en Didi via Alipay. D’ailleurs installez Alipay avant de partir car tout se fait par cette application, y compris l’achat d’une carte esim à un tarif imbattable (10j 1Go par jour soit 10Go pour environ 8€). Également à prévoir avant le départ sur chaque device que emportés l’installation d’un VPN qui permet d’accéder aux applications et site européens. Nous avons pris letsVPN version premium qui fonctionne très bien (environ 9€ pour un mois).
  L’appartement dans lequel nous avons séjourné est le B1405, le plus petit des deux situés au 14eme étage. Les photos correspondantes sont les dernières de l’annonce.
  L’appartement est moderne, confortable et propre. La cuisine est équipée du minimum mais vu le tarif des restaurants elle ne nous a pas servi.
  La machine à laver et le séchoir à linge pliant sont très appréciables.
  Tous les produits de premières nécessités sont fournis savon, shampoing, lessive, liquide vaisselle.
  L’appartement est très calme malgré les travaux au pied de l’immeuble.
  Il y a de nombreux commerces dans le quartier dont un family mark dans la rue d’à côté.
  La communication avec l’agence a été parfaite, un problème de fuite d’un robinet a été réglé dans la journée.
  Le fait de pouvoir laisser nos bagages le jour de notre départ a été très pratique.
  
  What could be improved: Le salon sans fenêtre. Le matelas en ressorts sur une planche de bois.
  Le paiement de la location se fait en dehors de Booking et n’est pas possible avec une CB contrairement à ce qui est indiqué dans l’annonce. Le plus simple et le moins coûteux est le paiement par Alipay mais attention pour les virements seules les CB chinoises sont acceptées directement par Alipay. Pour payer avec une CB française il faut créer un compte Remitly ce qui fonctionne tres bien. Alipay applique des frais sur les paiements à partir de 200 RMB. L’astuce consiste à faire plusieurs paiements de 200 RMB pour les éviter.

  Neat little apartment a short walk to the Peoples Park Metro. Clean with all the basics provided (shampoo, conditioner, washing machine and detergent, kitchen equipment, microwave). Aircon works great and there is a lift to get the the 14th floor!

  A homestay full of experience! Service, health, facilities are not to say! The room was very comfortable and functional, as comfortable as at home~
  The location of the room is easy to find, very clean, when contacting the owner, he is always there, good communication, there was a small episode in the middle, the friend's watch was forgotten in the room, the owner was enthusiastic to help communicate, and finally we found the watch left in the corner, really thank you very much!
  
  What could be improved: There is no problem, although the sound insulation of the house is not good, you can fully appreciate the customs of old Shanghai.

  The location is really good, about 3 minutes away from the subway station, there are also shared bicycles at the entrance of the community, and there are a lot of food nearby. The metro station is on lines 1, 2 and 8, which is very convenient to go anywhere. The landlord was very nice and responded in a timely manner, and any problems could be dealt with in a timely manner. I will choose to stay here next time I come to Shanghai. Great trip to Shanghai!

  The location is very convenient, close to the subway entrance and many scenic spots. The indoor environment is clean and tidy, the area is not very large, but the space arrangement is spacious and reasonable, well-equipped, and the security is also very good. Felt better than many hotels in every way and was very comfortable to stay in. The host was superb, welcoming, quick to reply to messages and resolve issues promptly. Great stay, will stay again next time I have the opportunity to come back to Shanghai.🥰🥰
