What truly distinguishes the Shanghai Downtown Hills Boutique Guesthouse is its positioning as a gateway to authentic Shanghai experiences while maintaining the comfort and convenience international travelers expect. I'm a frequent traveler but this hotel exceeded my expectations by all means. In addition, garden in front of the hotel was very relaxing and enjoyable.
What could be improved: i liked everything.Freda from United States – 27 March 2025 (9/10)
I had a wonderful stay at this lane house in Shanghai! The self-check-in process was incredibly smooth, making arrival hassle-free. The online customer service was exceptionally attentive and always ready to help, which made me feel well taken care of throughout my stay.
The room itself had a cozy, home-like atmosphere, with thoughtful details that made it comfortable and inviting. The shared spaces were beautifully designed. The location was another highlight, offering an authentic glimpse into Shanghai’s historic neighborhoods while still being convenient for exploring the city. Staying here gave me a real sense of the local culture, something you wouldn’t get in a typical hotel.
Overall, I loved my stay and would highly recommend this place to anyone looking for an authentic and comfortable experience in Shanghai!Holly from China – 27 March 2025 (9/10)
The location of the room is particularly good, you can find it after a short walk out of the subway entrance, the positioning is more accurate, but pay attention to the navigation of China, Google Maps is not very convenient, it looks inconspicuous outside the alley, and the decoration and facilities are more comfortable and new after entering the room.
If you need to clean, you can tell the customer service in advance, and the response is relatively fast, and you can help arrange it
Very satisfied, next time I have the opportunity to come backYenn from Malaysia – 5 March 2025 (9/10)
I was there at end February, actually 5 days ago. The place is easy to find (recommend to use China version of google map). I had no difficulty to locate it. I was early than my scheduled time, after contacting them, I got checked in without any fuss.
The common place was tastefully designed. I love the Kitchen and the common area. It has homey feel and I felt like was coming home. I had the Kenya room, it was lovely arranged, clean, spacious, comfortable, cozy and warm. It beats the average hotel rooms one finds in China. I loved the toilet as it was fitted with an electric bidet and sear warmer (lovely especially in the winter). No bath tub (which is super great as I dislike climbing in and out slippery tub).
The entire apartment though shared, it is quiet and cozy. Everything is self service, there are concierge or receptionist, but helps are easily to reach and easily available. I had no problem or difficulties in my 4D3N stays here.
The place is in an alley, it is a common old alley community (弄堂) (it is exactly the experience I was looking for). The surrounding has many eateries, both local and western. I had the opportunity to buy breakfast (soya drink, 油条&馅饼)from the neighbouring shop, and ate in the common area. I also had a chance to eat at 2 western cafe, sat at the window and watched locals and visitors alike walking by or rushing the work. There also many convenience stores nearby, though those chains operated would need a bit of walking to access. Lots of bars too, but the night scenes is quiet, there are no rowdy disorderly crowds, just folks enjoying quiet relaxing drinks and food in cozy indoor/outdoor setting. There's shopping district and malls near by (at JingAnSi 静安寺).
The entire neighbourhood (from which ever metro station you use), its peaceful, quiet and safe (at any hours).
What could be improved: Nothing.Pavel from Indonesia – 8 January 2025 (9/10)
We liked everything, starting from the communication with the host, finishing with the area we live and the beauty of the room. Most of all we liked thar there is a wall heating in this room and a big bath.

This was hands – down the most satisfying aspect of my China trip! I'm truly smitten with the homestay's decor and its prime location. The bedding is incredibly comfortable, adding to the overall coziness. The staff were also incredibly friendly. Despite my late arrival in Shanghai, they responded to my messages without delay and smoothly guided me through the check – in process. I'm already looking forward to booking this place again on my next visit to Shanghai.

This is my second time with hills and as usual everything was perfect! The house is clean, the ayi is nice to us. It is located in the old Shanghai compound but very easy to find.
I have stayed in several home stays in Shanghai and I normally found the mattress quite uncomfortable, but I slept very well here.
I will come back to China next year again and I will come back to hills for sure 😊Jing from Taiwan – 9 December 2024 (9/10)
I like that it’s in a local neighborhood, but very close to city center too. The house and environment are very comfy and quiet. I like the interior design and the big windows, you can hear birds chirping outside
What could be improved: Can hear footsteps and talking of others, but everyone is very careful to not disturb other people so i think its not a big problem during my stay.Rhys from United Kingdom – 3 December 2024 (9/10)
