Millennium Ancient Town River View B&B 1 Overview

First Impressions

Walking into Millennium Ancient Town River View B&B 1 feels like stepping back in time — but in the best possible way. This three-star gem sits right in the heart of Zhujiajiao’s historic district, and honestly, the location couldn’t be more perfect if you’re looking to experience authentic old Shanghai. The building itself has that weathered charm you’d expect from a traditional water town, with wooden details and stone pathways that make you forget you’re technically still within Shanghai’s city limits.

The Zhujiajiao Experience

You know what really sets this place apart? It’s actually inside the ancient town itself, not on some touristy periphery. I mean, you can literally hear the canal boats drifting by from your room, and the morning mist rolling off the water creates this almost mystical atmosphere. Zhujiajiao has been called the “Venice of Shanghai” — which sounds cheesy until you’re there at sunrise watching locals practice tai chi by the 400-year-old stone bridges. The narrow alleyways filled with tea houses and dumpling vendors are right outside your door.

Accommodations & Comfort

The rooms strike that tricky balance between traditional aesthetics and modern comfort. Sure, it’s not going to wow you with cutting-edge amenities, but everything works well and feels clean and thoughtful. The river views they promise? They actually deliver — though some rooms have better angles than others, so it’s worth asking when you book. The beds are comfortable enough, and there’s decent WiFi if you need to stay connected (though honestly, this is the kind of place where you might want to disconnect for a bit).

Morning Rituals

Breakfast here leans heavily Asian — think congee, steamed buns, pickled vegetables, and surprisingly good coffee. It’s served in a common area that overlooks the canal, and there’s something really peaceful about starting your day watching the town wake up. Local vendors paddle by selling fresh produce, and you’ll see elderly residents heading to the market with their canvas bags. The restaurant staff seems genuinely proud of their setup, and they’re happy to explain what everything is if you’re not familiar with traditional Chinese breakfast foods.

Why Guests Love It

This place has earned its solid reputation, especially among couples looking for something different from the usual Shanghai hotel experience. The ancient town setting creates this romantic, almost timeless atmosphere that’s particularly magical in the evening when the traditional lanterns light up along the waterways. Parking can be a bit tricky since cars aren’t really welcome in the old town center, but the staff helps coordinate drop-offs. What really wins people over is the authentic feel — you’re not just visiting Zhujiajiao, you’re actually staying in it, waking up to the sounds and rhythms of daily life in this 1,700-year-old water town.

Reviews of Millennium Ancient Town River View B&B 1

  • Lesley from United Kingdom – 27 March 2024 (9/10)

Loved the ancient river town. Quiet and tranquil
    Bry spacious and comfortable.

What could be improved: Not really a dislike but be aware the travel into Shanghai took 90 minutes.

  • Travelwithteens from United Kingdom – 27 February 2024 (7/10)

Unique nice decor. s oft bedding, on one smaller canal

What could be improved: The process of agreeing to get keys a meet the host was a mess. Also description made me understand we would get a proper apartment but it was three separate bedrooms with no kitchen or living area so we stuck to one bedroom – so it was in the end more expensive than the 5 star hotels we stayed on this trip. B7C no kitchen couldn't heat room or food, had no utensils to eat takeaway. Was also very cold on arrival and host brought extra heater which helped in the end.
