Metropolitan Residence Overview
First Impressions
Walking into Metropolitan Residence, you immediately sense this isn’t your typical business hotel — even though it’s tucked away in Shanghai’s Putuo district. The lobby has this understated elegance that feels more like a private club than a five-star hotel, and honestly, that’s exactly what drew me in. The staff greets you by name (they actually remember it), and there’s this calm sophistication that makes you forget you’re in one of the world’s busiest cities.
The Putuo Advantage
Here’s what I love about this location — you’re away from the tourist chaos but still incredibly well-connected. Li Quan Road might not ring a bell if you’re new to Shanghai, but locals know this area is having a moment. You’ve got authentic neighborhood restaurants within walking distance, and the metro connections mean you can reach the Bund or Xintiandi in about 20 minutes. Couples seem to get this immediately — there’s something romantic about discovering a hidden gem rather than staying where everyone else does. The vibrant local culture and excellent dining scene make this area particularly appealing for travelers seeking authentic experiences.
The Room Experience
The room I stayed in was genuinely spacious by Shanghai standards, with floor-to-ceiling windows that actually open (you’d be surprised how rare that is). What struck me most was the attention to detail — the blackout curtains that actually block out light, the bathroom with a soaking tub that’s deep enough for a proper soak, and a work desk positioned perfectly for natural light. The kitchen setup in the suite was more functional than I expected, with quality appliances that you’d actually want to use. Every element reflects careful consideration for guest comfort, from the premium linens to the thoughtfully designed storage solutions.
Dining and Amenities
The on-site restaurant serves this interesting fusion of Shanghainese and international cuisine — nothing too experimental, but executed really well. I particularly enjoyed their breakfast spread, which manages to satisfy both Western and Chinese preferences without feeling like a compromise. The spa facilities are beautifully designed and never crowded, offering a peaceful retreat from the bustling city. There’s also parking available right on-site, which is honestly a luxury in this city. The fitness center and business facilities round out the comprehensive amenities package.
Why Guests Love It
What makes Metropolitan Residence work is that it feels like a well-kept secret. You’re getting five-star service and amenities without the pretension or the crowds that come with the famous hotel names. The location rating speaks for itself — guests consistently rate it highly because it offers that perfect balance of accessibility and authenticity. Whether you’re here for business or leisure, you’ll appreciate having a sophisticated base that doesn’t feel like every other international hotel. It’s the kind of place where you can actually relax and feel like you’re experiencing Shanghai rather than just visiting it. The apartment-style suites provide the perfect home away from home, with spacious layouts and residential-style amenities.

Reviews of Metropolitan Residence
Jane from Hong Kong – 4 November 2024 (9/10)
The residence tower is located in a quiet neighborhood, still have nice restaurants around. Very surprise to find Tim Hortons around the corner.
What could be improved: Most of the taxi drivers did not know how to come through to the residence tower.Mesfen from United Arab Emirates – 15 May 2024 (8/10)
no breakfast
What could be improved: hard to find by locationSiddique from India – 5 May 2024 (7/10)
All the staff were very good , except for one lady , I cannot tell her name , because just for one person I cannot judge and comment on the whole staff.
What could be improved: Excellent location, good service , clean hotel , nice ambienceJustin from Australia – 12 April 2024 (7/10)
Location was good.
What could be improved: Basic rooms. Bit expensive for what it was. Staff wasn't helpful and rude. Won't stay next time. Heaps of other nicer places aroundDominic from Australia – 9 April 2024 (8/10)
Big spacious comfy room
Arne from United Kingdom – 21 March 2024 (8/10)
Very helpful front of house staff.
Kieren from New Zealand – 29 February 2024 (8/10)
Close enough to train. Fairly spacious. Felt modern and clean. Overall pretty happy with our stay.
What could be improved: Didn't have some basic amenities like hand soap or cutlery. Didn't clean cups with daily room service, and no dishsoap was provided to do ourselves.Levon from Armenia – 2 October 2023 (7/10)
The positive part of the hotel. The rooms are clean and big enough.Hotel is not far from metro station (700m).Cafe is just nearby.
What could be improved: One of the important conditions was a kitchen and a washing machine because we have a small child with us.The previous reviews were not bad then we chooses this hotel.
In fact, we did not like the hotel. We paid not a small amount for two rooms.Kitchen without dishes.Wifi is very weak.In the evening, you call reception, no one picks up the phone. One watchman is sitting. The bathroom door won't close.Soap wasn't even provided. The air conditioner itself decides to work for cooling or just ventilation. The gym is 400m from the hotel. Not at all 5 stars as stated. It's easier to rent an apartment without stars and not overpay.I would not recommend this hotel.Karma from Hong Kong – 24 September 2023 (8/10)
The unit was very clean, well designed and the construction was top knotch.
But it is an Air B N B'ish.
What could be improved: Well! The bed was hard, the pillow too soft. Not sure if the hot water is actually working, it was not too strong. Please do check when you book in winter.Марина from Russia – 3 September 2023 (7/10)
Friendly kind staff and clean hotel.
What could be improved: I didn't have enough bathroom accessories. Elementary in the room there is not even soap. There is also a washing machine in the room, but there is not even a disposable powder bag. Initially, the hotel is declared as an apart-hotel, and it seems to be a large refrigerator and a sink, but there is no microwave in the room and there are no cutlery except two glasses.
