Melia Shanghai Parkside Overview
First Impressions
Walking into Melia Shanghai Parkside, you immediately sense this isn’t your typical business hotel — there’s something more refined about the whole experience. The five-star property sits in Pudong’s quieter residential area, which honestly feels like a breath of fresh air compared to the tourist-packed sections of the city. I mean, you’re still close to everything that matters, but there’s this sense of discovering something locals actually know about. The lobby has that understated luxury feel that Spanish hotel groups do so well, and you can tell from the start that couples have figured this place out (they rate the location a stellar 9.5, and I totally get why).
Location & Neighborhood
Here’s what I love about the Shendi West Road location — you’re in Pudong but away from the chaos of Lujiazui’s skyscrapers and tourist crowds. The neighborhood feels authentically Shanghai, with tree-lined streets and that mix of modern residential buildings and local shops that gives you a real sense of how people actually live here. You’ve got the Metro within walking distance, so getting to the Bund or Nanjing Road is straightforward, but when you come back in the evening, it’s to this peaceful pocket where you can actually hear yourself think. Plus, there’s free private parking, which anyone who’s driven in Shanghai will tell you is worth its weight in gold.
The Rooms
The rooms strike that perfect balance between contemporary design and comfort — nothing too flashy, but everything works exactly as it should. What impressed me most was the attention to detail in the furnishings and the quality of the linens, which you don’t always get even at this level. The bathrooms are particularly well-appointed, with that rainfall shower situation that actually has proper water pressure (you know how hit-or-miss that can be in some hotels). Floor-to-ceiling windows let in plenty of natural light, and if you’re lucky enough to get a room facing the right direction, you’ll catch glimpses of the city skyline without feeling like you’re living in a fishbowl.
Breakfast Experience
The breakfast buffet here is honestly one of the better hotel spreads I’ve encountered in Shanghai. They’ve got the international bases covered — proper American-style options alongside an impressive Asian selection that goes well beyond the usual fried rice and dumplings. What sets it apart is the execution; everything feels fresh and thoughtfully prepared rather than just thrown together for the masses. The coffee is actually decent too, which might sound like a small thing, but when you’re dealing with jet lag or early morning meetings, it makes all the difference.
Why Guests Love It
There’s something about Melia Shanghai Parkside that just works, especially for couples looking for a more intimate Shanghai experience. Recent guests consistently rate it 9.4 for location, and after staying here, I understand the appeal — it’s that rare combination of accessibility and tranquility that’s hard to find in a city this size. You’re not paying for a famous address or flashy amenities you’ll never use; instead, you’re getting solid luxury hospitality in a neighborhood that feels like a well-kept secret. It’s the kind of place where you can easily imagine extending your stay just because it feels right.

It is only a 20 minute walk to Disneyland. Beautiful grounds and gardens. You would never know you were near Shanghai, it is like staying in park lands.
What could be improved: Cost of breakfast. Again a buffet style no option or a smaller continental breakfast. This seems to be a theme on China stays.Brechbuehler from Switzerland – 20 April 2025 (8/10)
