Hilton Garden Inn Shanghai Hongqiao NECC Overview
First Impressions
Walking into the Hilton Garden Inn Shanghai Hongqiao NECC, you immediately sense this isn’t your typical airport hotel — though honestly, that’s exactly what I thought it would be when I first booked it. The lobby feels surprisingly spacious and modern, with that clean Hilton Garden Inn aesthetic that somehow manages to feel both professional and welcoming. What struck me right away was how quiet everything felt, despite being in such a business-heavy area of Shanghai. The staff switched effortlessly between Mandarin and English, which I appreciated since my Chinese is, well, pretty much nonexistent.
Location & Getting Around
Here’s the thing about Qingpu District — it’s not downtown Shanghai, but that’s actually part of its charm. You’re positioned perfectly for the National Exhibition and Convention Center (hence the “NECC” in the name), which means if you’re here for business or trade shows, you’ve hit the jackpot. The area has this interesting mix of modern developments and quieter residential streets, and I found myself enjoying evening walks more than I expected. Free parking is a genuine blessing here since driving in Shanghai can be… an adventure. The metro connections aren’t bad either, though you’ll want to factor in travel time if you’re planning to explore the Bund or other central attractions.
The Room Experience
My room was exactly what you’d expect from a four-star Hilton Garden Inn — clean, functional, and surprisingly comfortable. The bed was actually fantastic (I’m picky about mattresses), and the workspace setup worked perfectly for catching up on emails. What I didn’t expect was how well-soundproofed everything was — you’d think being near a major exhibition center would mean noise, but I slept like a baby. The bathroom was modern with good water pressure, though nothing particularly fancy. There’s something to be said for a hotel that just gets the basics absolutely right without trying to be flashy about it.
Breakfast & Dining
The breakfast buffet here is honestly one of the better hotel spreads I’ve encountered in Shanghai. They’ve got the continental basics covered, but the Asian options are where things get interesting — proper congee, fresh dim sum items, and local Shanghai breakfast favorites that you won’t find at most international chains. I mean, where else can you have both perfectly crispy bacon and authentic xiaolongbao at the same breakfast table? The coffee was decent too, which matters more than it should when you’re dealing with jet lag and early morning meetings.
Why Guests Love It
What really sets this place apart is how it balances business functionality with genuine comfort — couples particularly seem to appreciate this combination, rating the location highly for good reason. It’s that rare hotel where everything just works without any drama or surprises. You’ve got reliable wifi, helpful staff who actually know the area, and that sense of being well-located without being in the thick of tourist chaos. For business travelers especially, it hits that sweet spot of being professional enough for work needs while still feeling like a place you’d actually want to spend time in after hours.
Savvy travelers reserve a hotel in Shanghai before Fashion Week electrifies catwalks from Jing’an to Pudong.

Hilton is Hilton, everything is perfect there
What could be improved: Breakfast could be in the middle of both continents. Some food could be for Europeans, but I found there only for Chinese citizensPamila from Sri Lanka – 30 December 2024 (9/10)
I had an excellent stay at the Hilton Garden Inn Shanghai, and I want to give special thanks to the front desk staff. They were incredibly kind, professional, and helpful throughout our stay. They assisted us with everything we needed and even offered a complimentary room upgrade that perfectly met our requirements. Their outstanding service truly made a difference.
The hotel itself was clean, comfortable, and well-maintained, with all the amenities needed for a relaxing stay. The location was good as well with nearby restaurants. I highly recommend this hotel and will definitely return on my next visit to Shanghai.
