Evergreen Laurel Hotel, Shanghai Overview

First Impressions

Walking into the Evergreen Laurel Hotel, Shanghai, you immediately sense this is a place that knows what it’s doing. The lobby has this understated elegance — not flashy, but polished in a way that suggests they’ve been perfecting their approach for years. What struck me most was how the staff seemed to genuinely recognize returning guests, which makes sense given that this four-star property apparently has more repeat visitors than most hotels in the area. There’s something to be said for a place that keeps people coming back.

The Pudong Advantage

The location on Zu Chong Road in Pudong puts you right in the heart of Shanghai’s financial district, but honestly, it’s the little things that make this spot work so well. You’re close enough to the action without dealing with the chaos of the older parts of the city, and couples seem to particularly love it here — I can see why, since the area has this modern energy during the day but quiets down nicely in the evenings. The parking situation is actually refreshing too; they offer free private spots, which anyone who’s driven in Shanghai will tell you is practically a miracle.

Room Experience

The room I stayed in felt thoughtfully designed rather than just decorated. Everything worked properly — and I mean everything, from the air conditioning to the shower pressure. The windows are large enough to give you a real sense of the city, and the soundproofing is better than you’d expect for this price range. It’s not trying to be the fanciest space you’ve ever seen, but there’s a comfort level here that makes you want to actually spend time in the space rather than just crash for the night.

Morning Routine

The breakfast buffet deserves its own mention because it strikes that perfect balance between variety and quality. You know how some hotel buffets feel like they’re just going through the motions? This isn’t that. They’ve got both Western and Chinese options that actually taste like someone cares about them, and the restaurant space itself has enough room that you’re not fighting for a table even during busy periods. I found myself lingering over coffee longer than usual, which is always a good sign.

Why Guests Love It

What really sets this place apart is how it handles the details without making a big show of it. The recent guest ratings speak for themselves — a 9.3 for location tells you that people aren’t just satisfied, they’re impressed. It’s the kind of hotel that doesn’t oversell itself but consistently delivers on what it promises. Whether you’re here for business in Pudong or exploring Shanghai more broadly, you’ll find yourself in a spot that just works, with staff who seem to actually care about making your stay smooth rather than just checking boxes.

Exploring Shanghai layers shikumen courtyards, jazz-age lobbies, and twilight ferries past the Oriental Pearl.

Reviews of Evergreen Laurel Hotel, Shanghai

  • Anika from Germany – 14 April 2025 (8/10)

Friendly staff with good english skills. Breakfast is okay. Rooms are spacious but old-fashioned.

What could be improved: Very loud even with closed windows. In addition to the noise of the traffic, there is a training station for firemen next to the hotel, which woke me up during the weekdays with their shouting. I was on the 9th floor.

  • Mattias from Belgium – 28 October 2024 (8/10)

Extensive breakfast buffet with fresh foods, fusion between Asian and western kitchen and an omelette station.

What could be improved: I understand English might not be a number 1 priority, but for a 4 star international hotel I would expect communication in English to be easier with the staff.
