Baolong Hotel Shanghai Overview
First Impressions
Walking into Baolong Hotel Shanghai, you get that solid, dependable feeling that comes with a well-run four-star property. It’s not trying to be flashy or over-the-top — honestly, that’s what I liked about it. The lobby has this understated elegance that feels authentically Chinese without being touristy, and the staff actually seems to know what they’re doing. You know what really caught my attention? The way they handle check-in is refreshingly efficient, which matters when you’ve just dragged yourself off a long flight into Shanghai.
The Hongkou Advantage
Here’s something most tourists don’t realize — staying in Hongkou District is actually pretty smart. You’re away from the absolute chaos of the Bund area, but still close enough to get there in about 15 minutes by metro. The neighborhood around Yixian Road has this lived-in feel where you’ll see locals going about their daily routines, which I find way more interesting than being stuck in a tourist bubble. There are some excellent hole-in-the-wall noodle shops within walking distance, and the parking situation is genuinely stress-free since the hotel has its own private lot.
Room Reality Check
The room I stayed in was larger than I expected — not huge by American standards, but definitely spacious for Shanghai. The bed was properly comfortable (I’m picky about this), and the bathroom had one of those rainfall showers that actually works well. What impressed me was the attention to practical details: plenty of outlets, decent WiFi that doesn’t cut out every five minutes, and blackout curtains that really block the light. The view isn’t spectacular, but you’re looking out at real Shanghai neighborhoods, which beats staring at another hotel building.
Breakfast Worth Getting Up For
I’ll be honest — hotel breakfasts in China can be hit or miss, but this one surprised me. The buffet setup includes both Asian and American options, so you can go for congee and dim sum or stick with eggs and toast if you’re feeling homesick. The coffee is actually drinkable (not always a given), and they do this thing with fresh fruit that’s cut perfectly and tastes like it was just prepared. I mean, it’s not going to change your life, but it sets you up well for a day of exploring the city.
Why Guests Love It
What really makes this place work is that it doesn’t oversell itself — it just delivers on the basics really well. Couples seem to particularly appreciate the quieter location and the fact that you can actually have a conversation in the restaurant without shouting over tourist crowds. The staff speaks solid English, the neighborhood feels safe for evening walks, and you’re positioned perfectly for day trips to both the historic areas and the modern financial district. It’s the kind of place where you sleep well, eat decently, and wake up ready to tackle Shanghai without feeling like you’ve blown your budget on unnecessary frills.

What could be improved: There was a water leak in the lobby. The hotel only provided the room with two tiny bottles of drinking water a day. Of course we needed more.Hannah from South Korea – 4 October 2024 (8/10)
